Race Time Predictor — VERT.RUN
Free trail running race time predictor powered by VERT.RUN. Enter your ITRA or UTMB Index
and choose from 18,000+ races — including UTMB® Mont Blanc, Western States 100, Hardrock 100,
and races from more than 80 countries — to get a personalised finish time estimate across
optimistic, realistic, and conservative scenarios.
What is the UTMB Index?
The UTMB Index is a performance score from 0 to 1000 issued by UTMB World. It reflects your
trail running level based on your best results in UTMB-registered races over the past three
years. A higher score unlocks entry to more competitive UTMB World Series races. Elite runners
typically hold scores above 800.
What is the ITRA Index?
The ITRA Performance Index (International Trail Running Association) scores your trail running
ability from 0 to 1000 based on your finishing times relative to the winning time and the
overall field. Scores above 400 indicate a seasoned club runner; above 600 is nationally
competitive; above 700 is elite level.
How to increase your UTMB or ITRA Index
Race consistently in ITRA or UTMB-registered events, target races where your fitness is
competitive within your gender and age group, and focus on improving your mountain running
capacity — both indexes reward strong performances on technical, high-elevation courses.
How to know how long a race will take you
Use this tool. Enter your fitness index, age, and target race. The algorithm accounts for
distance, elevation, terrain, and historical winning times to produce a realistic finish time
range. Enable JavaScript to use the interactive predictor.
How to pace a trail race
Divide your predicted finish time by the total distance for an average pace, then adjust for
terrain: expect slower climbs (+1 min per 100m of ascent) and faster descents. Break the
course into aid-station segments and assign a target time to each one.
